STOCK PRICES ARE MIXED IN MIDDAY TRADING

Stocks were mixed today as a series of profit reports from high-profile companies failed to impress investors.

At 3 p.m. the Dow Jones industrial average was up 4.67 at 8,076.89.

Broader blue-chip measures were also posting modest gains, but those sectors dominated by technology and smaller-company shares were slightly lower.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 5-to-4 margin on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Standard & Poor's 500 list was up 3.62 at 971.72, and the NYSE composite index was up 1.85 at 509.25.

The Nasdaq composite index was down 3.84 at 1,738.28, pressured by some sluggishness among bellwether technology shares such as Intel, down 2 at 90 9/1 6.

Among the blue-chip names that reported on their third-quarter results this morning, Eastman Kodak was up 7/8 at 64 7/1 6; General Motors was down 3/4 at 70 1 1/1 6; Texas Instruments was down 4 1/2 at 136 1/2 ; and Merrill Lynch was down 1 3/8 at 75 5/8 .

The Dow's strongest issue was United Technologies, up 1 3/1 6 at 79 3/1 6. Eastman Kodak, up 1 1/1 6 at 64 5/8 , reported a 43 percent drop in third-quarter profits, but beat many analyst forecasts.

Overseas today, Tokyo's Nikkei stock average rose 0.6 percent. In afternoon trading, London's FT-SE 100 was down 0.1 percent.
