Tens of thousands of pilgrims converged on the shrine of Fatima Monday to mark the 80th anniversary of the last "apparition" of the Virgin Mary to three Portuguese shepherd children.
The final vision Oct. 13, 1917, coincided with the so-called "Miracle of the Sun," when witnesses say the sun appeared to fall and rise again in the sky. Mary is believed to have appeared five times.
More than 100,000 faithful, some from as far away as South Korea, gathered in the shrine's square to hear the Archbishop of Paris, Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger, say that the message of Fatima remained as relevant today as eight decades ago.
"Be good workers, builders and architects of the temple of God," he urged in his homily.
