NEWSTEAD PONDERS STEP TO CUT GARBAGE COSTS

Newstead officials during a special session Monday night discussed what steps the town must take in an effort to reduce overall garbage expenses.

Because of high costs, the town has decided to rebid rather than renew its existing garbage-dumping contract with American Ref-Fuel. The town currently pays a $54.88-a-ton dumping fee.

Early this month, the Akron Village Board agreed to be included, as an option, in the town's rebidding of the garbage contract.

Joseph M. Hickman, sales manager for Modern Disposal Services, reviewed components of a unified bid process that calls for combining curbside recycling with refuse collection.

He said he can help the town develop a package that would reduce costs.
