Matthew Amico, 9, a fourth-grader at St. Mark's School, sent us two essays:

Fall is my favorite time of year because hockey season starts. I like to jump in big piles of leaves. I like to watch the Bills play, too. I like the Buffalo Bills because I am from Buffalo. It is fun seeing all the kids' Halloween costumes. It is very fun to go trick-or-treating with all my friends. School also starts in fall. Most kids say they don't like school. I love school. My favorite subject is math. I like math because when I grow up I want to be a pilot. So I like fall. Do you?

To play a hockey game is very exciting. Hockey is fun from the minute you step on the ice to the minute you leave the rink. I play hockey. It is fun just to listen to the crowd roaring when you step on the ice or when your team scores a goal. Hockey is a game you have to love in order to be a winner. Hockey is not just about winning, it's about having fun, and a love for the game. That's what hockey is about.

If I were one inch tall
My writing would be so small
It could be like being in a zoo
With flies, ants and cockroaches, too
If I could go into any room
And hopefully not meet my doom
By the steps of those who roam around
Like everything is their own
But the fun I would have
Climbing up curtains
Sliding down leaves
Into the pool
Hopping on people making them itch
But for now I'll stay my normal size
But if I were one inch tall
I could drive people right up the wall
If I were one inch tall
