GALLERY PHOTO OF CRUCIFIX IN URINE IS SMASHED

One teen-ager created a diversion at a gallery Sunday while another used a hammer to destroy a copy of Andres Serrano's notorious photograph that shows a crucifix submerged in the artist's urine.

It was the second attack in as many days on the New York artist's religiously charged "Piss Christ" at the National Gallery of Victoria, and it prompted curators to close the exhibition, arguing they couldn't guarantee its safety.

Serrano's work had gone on display there Saturday after the Catholic Church and other religious groups lost a court fight to block the exhibit. The photograph has generated debate worldwide for its treatment of a religious symbol and has been cited during debate in the United States over public funding of the arts.
