A city firefighter rescued a young boy trapped in a Prospect Avenue house fire this morning after finding the youngster unconscious in a second-floor bedroom.
Tito Suarez, 6, was taken to Children's Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. He was being treated in the intensive care unit, a hospital spokesman said.
Firefighter Mark Jarczyk of Rescue 1 found the boy on the floor in a bedroom and carried him to a waiting ambulance, fire officials said.
"We went in through a second-floor window and did a search, and I happened to go into the right room, and there he was on the floor unconscious," Jarczyk said. "I carried him out to the ambulance, where we worked on him and got him back. He was breathing and had a pulse."
As he carried the boy down a flight of steps in the house, Jarczyk said, he was guided by other firefighters.
The cause of the fire, reported at 10 a.m. in the 2 1/2 -story, wood-frame house at 738 Prospect, remains under investigation, fire officials said.
