A City of Tonawanda man underwent lengthy surgery Sunday in Erie County Medical Center after being seriously hurt in a one-car accident that went unreported for over two hours, the Sheriff's Department reported.
Terry A. Smith, 25, of 36 Clarence Harder Road, was at the wheel of a car that struck two trees in front of 2140 River Road. Deputy Paul J. Moran said the resident of that address, Phyllis Brzezinski, said she looked out her window at 5:30 a.m. and everything was normal. She said she did not hear a crash.
However, dispatcher Patricia Lacomb said a passing motorist saw the wrecked car about 6 a.m., but the Sheriff's Department was not informed until 8:20.
Moran said there was no evidence that Smith made any attempt to stop before his car struck the trees. He speculated that Smith fell asleep at the wheel. Smith was semi-conscious when pulled from the car. He was taken to Buffalo in the Frontier Volunteer Fire Company ambulance.
