An unidentified man was killed and four other people were taken to area hospitals after a collision between a pickup truck and a motor home that engulfed both vehicles in flames Sunday night in the Town of Rushford, state police at Wellsville reported.
The man, who was a passenger in the pickup truck, was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash at about 9:30 p.m. on Route 243. State police said drunken-driving charges are pending against the driver of the eastbound pickup truck, Jeffrey Vandixon, 30, of Rushford.
Vandixon's vehicle failed to yield the right of way when he attempted a left turn into a driveway. His vehicle collided with the westbound motor home, which was hauling a loaded horse trailer.
After the crash, the pickup truck and the motor home slid off the road together and burst into flames. Meanwhile, the horse trailer separated from the motor home and slid some 300 feet into a drainage ditch, but none of the horses aboard was seriously injured.
Vandixon was taken to Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville, then transported by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo, where he was listed in critical condition today in the trauma intensive care unit.
The driver of the motor home, Donna Jensen, 37, of Huntington Court, Hamburg, was taken to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, Springville, where she was listed today in fair condition. Two passengers in her vehicle also were taken to that hospital, but neither one was still there this morning.
Vandixon also faces charges for failure to yield the right of way.
