I don't know why John Muckler was released by the Sabres. Perhaps it was the answer to an in-house problem or perhaps something else. But, when the deed was done a replacement was found.
I don't know why Ted Nolan rejected the contract extension. Perhaps he wanted to play the "I want more, I deserve more" game that is prevalent in the professional sports world today. Maybe he had other reasons.
In any event, after a reconsideration period, the offer was withdrawn, he left and a replacement was found. Muckler and Nolan had time to establish the respect they garnered; their replacements, put in unenviable situations, deserve as much.
