Nearly a third of the 279 fish species reviewed by national fisheries experts in a recent survey have been "overfished," Commerce Department officials told Congress recently in a progress report on efforts to salvage declining ocean fish stocks.
Under a law passed last year, regional fish management councils will use the information to develop programs to end overfishing and rebuild depleted fish populations.
The National Marine Fisheries Service report lists 96 species as overfished or approaching overfishing, and 183 species that haven't been overfished. Another 448 fish stocks are listed as "unknown," with research continuing.
