GAS LINE BREAK PROMPTS EVACUATION

Several homes in the Millstream section of the City of Tonawanda were evacuated briefly Friday afternoon when a contractor hit a natural gas line at a road construction site.

The break occurred shortly after 3 p.m. in the Colvin Boulevard-Young Street area, where work continues on ramps to the Youngmann Memorial Highway. Crews were drilling a hole for a light standard, according to Town of Tonawanda fire dispatch.

While firefighters remained on standby until the gas line was turned off, City of Tonawanda police evacuated 8 or 10 homes on Frederick Road that were closest to the scene. Residents were allowed to return home within about an hour.
