CANISIUS BLANKS RIDER IN SOCCER

Freshman Lisa Holakowski collected a goal and an assist to lead Canisius to a 2-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer win over visiting Rider on Friday afternoon.

Holakowski steered a Shannon Gregory corner kick into the net in the first half and then set up Shannon Strykowski for her tally with just two minutes left in the match.

Amanda Slater got the shutout as the Griffs improved to 4-2 in the conference and 5-5 overall.

Jessica Sheehan's goal in the second overtime period lifted Loyola to a 3-2 MAAC win over Niagara. The Purple Eagles had taken a 2-1 lead in the second half on a goal by Jenny Lannier, before the Greyhounds got the tying marker from Melissa Martenek with 21 minutes left in regulation.

Lynda Hughes had the other goal for Niagara (3-6-2, 1-4-1), while goalkeeper Jackie Konik made 16 saves for the Eagles.

Ann Keegan blasted a shot off the crossbar and into the net 12 minutes into the second half to lift St. Bonaventure (6-5-1, 1-3-1) to a 1-1 Atlantic 10 Conference tie with visiting Fordham. Elizabeth Gabor scored for Fordham. The Bonnies outshot Fordham, 33-14.

Jennifer Rera (Tonawanda) made 11 saves, but her efforts were not enough to keep Buffalo State from falling to Potsdam State, 1-0. The Bengals are 1-8.

MEN'S SOCCER: Michael Rudney (Akron) tied it with 12 seconds left in regulation on a penalty kick and then scored the winning goal for Buffalo State in a 4-3 double-overtime win against Potsdam State. Craig Ross (Wilson) had one of the other goals for the Bengals (5-5).

Mike Domm netted both goals to carry Fredonia State (9-3) to a 2-0 SUNYAC victory over Plattsburgh. Dave Merrick registered the shutout with nine saves.

St. Bonaventure more than doubled Fordham's shot total (19-8) but dropped a 2-0 Atlantic 10 verdict to the Rams. Conference scoring leader John Wolyniec netted his 15th and 16 goals of the season for Fordham. The Bonnies fall to 6-5, 2-3.

Christian Barletta made 11 saves for the University at Buffalo in a 1-0 overtime loss to Central Connecticut. The Bulls are 1-1 in Mid-Continent Conference play.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: UB (9-11) beat Valparaiso, 15-6, 14-16, 15-9, 15-10 in a Mid-Con match in which Kathy Brinkworth (Frontier) had 14 kills and 15 digs and Amy Burda also had 14 kills and 15 digs.
