CANADA TO RETURN ENVOY TO ISRAEL AFTER RIFT

The Canadian government said Friday it was sending its ambassador back to Israel after receiving a written apology and assurances from Israel about the use of Canadian passports by Mossad agents.

Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy told Parliament he planned to travel to Israel before the end of the year to smooth over relations with the Jewish state.

Ties between the two countries hit a low point after a bungled attempt in Jordan last month by Mossad agents, using false Canadian passports, to assassinate Khaled Meshal, political head of the Islamic militant Hamas movement.

Axworthy said Ambassador David Berger probably would return to Israel next week.
