Junior slotback Jim Matheis was in the right place at a perfect time for Williamsville South Thursday night.
Matheis fell on a teammate's fumble in the end zone with 40 seconds left to give the Billies a 14-7 win over arch rival Williamsville North in a Section VI Federation Division III football game. South is 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the division; North fell to 2-4, 1-4.
Trailing, 7-6, South took over on its winning drive at the North 47. With under a minute left, Ed Przylucki ran the ball to the North 1 before it was jarred loose and Matheis alertly fell on it for the score. South took a 6-0 first-quarter lead on defensive end Tim Creahan's 42-yard return of a fumble he caused with a sack. North, which got 182 yards rushing from Slyvester Fryar, went ahead in the fourth quarter on John Edel's 1-yard run and Ryan Cox's extra point.
In another Division III game, freshman quarterback Brian Donnelly threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to junior Jesse Hoffman as visiting Williamsville East (3-3, 3-2) pulled away from Amherst, 17-0. Nick Taranto's 30-yard field goal in the third quarter opened the scoring for East. Donnelly put the game away with TD passes of 1 and 3 yards to Hoffman. Aaron Maraschiello led the East defense with 10 tackles. Amherst fell to 2-4, 1-4.
