Bernard J. Bird, who served as city and county treasurer during the late 1940s and early '50s, died Oct. 1, 1997, in Maryhaven Home, Glenview, Ill. He was 94.

A resident of Northbrook, Ill., since 1985, Bird had been a high school teacher in Buffalo and a professor of sociology at Canisius College.

As a freshman at the University of Notre Dame in the 1920s, Bird scrimmaged with the legendary Four Horsemen under coach Knute Rockne until a knee injury ended his football career. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1928.

"My father was a consummate Notre Dame booster," recalled his son, Dr. John J. of Northbrook. "He rarely missed a game on television right up until his death, and he had been active in the Notre Dame Alumni Association much of his life."

Survivors also include his wife, the former Marie Sheridan; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Ill.
