The Wales Town Board Tuesday honored Kimberly Marzec, 11, of South Wales for calling 911 when a neighbor was severely burned while attempting to light a fire on July 22.
After calling her mother to help care for the neighbor's children, Kimberly waited at the end of a drive to direct emergency crews to the victim. Supervisor Mary Weinman called Kimberly "mature beyond her age."
A board vote to prepare bid specifications for demolition of the Heidle house next door to the community center to make way for additional parking space sparked a debate between councilmen.
Councilman Adrian Keem said removing the house only reveals another eyesore, the shed behind it. He said he would vote for the house removal only if the shed came down within six months also. Councilman Ed Bogucki reminded Keem that the shed was full of highway equipment that needed to be under some kind of roof to protect it.
