START TEACHING CHINESE

We need to begin teaching standard Chinese (Mandarin) in our high schools and colleges. By 2000, it is predicted that China will have the second-largest economy in the world. Ten or 15 years from then, who knows?

In China, every student entering college is required to learn English and pass a competency test. Why? Because English is the international language of diplomacy and commerce. But someday, Chinese may fill this spot.

Chinese and English are now the two most spoken languages in the world. Our schools need to prepare for the future.
