Construction of a planned Tops market at Transit and Rehm roads in the Town of Lancaster has been put off until spring, a Tops representative announced this week.
The new store is to be built as the anchor business in a plaza currently under construction. Final plans for a Hollywood Video retail store to be built in the plaza this fall were approved by the Town Board this week.
THe plaza was proposed last year and has since passed through several development firms, town officials said. The current developer is Benderson Development Co.
Supervisor Robert H. Giza said he wanted to put to rest rumors that the Town Board was "dragging its feet" by not accommodating Tops quickly enough to insure construction before winter.
Tops representatives said the delay was an internal decision.
The Tops store that will be built at the site has been scaled down from an original size of 77,000 square feet to a current projection of between 60,000 and 70,000 square feet, said Mitchell Recoon, real estate manager for Tops.
"We're re-engineering the interior of the store," Recoon said. "We're committed to the site. . . . We're just trying to tailor it to the community."
