ALEXANDER STEPPING DOWN FROM NEA POST

As long expected, actress Jane Alexander is stepping down as chairwoman of the National Endowment for the Arts after apparently winning another year of life for the agency, according to published reports.

Both the Washington Post and the New York Times reported in today's editions that she has shared with friends her intention to follow through on a desire to resume her acting career.

Alexander, 57, spent much of her four-year tenure as head of the agency defending it from conservatives in Congress who wanted to strip it of operating funds.
