A pair of animal ambassadors will visit Western New York to help make a case for the restoration of their species to the forests of the Northeast.

Wolves named Sila and Merlin, sponsored by the Defenders of Wildlife and Mission Wolf, will appear Friday at Boston Valley School and Sunday at the Buffalo Museum of Science as part of a six-week tour of New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Connecticut in conjunction with National Wolf Awareness Week Oct. 20 to 26, which will publicize the plight of wolves.

The eastern timber wolf, once abundant in forests from New England to Minnesota, was systematically killed by bounty hunters in the 19th century. Now listed as an endangered species, the wolf is being considered for reintroduction to the Adirondack Mountains.
