76ERS' IVERSON APPEALS SUSPENSION BY NBA

Philadelphia 76ers point guard Allen Iverson has appealed a one-game suspension the NBA imposed on him following his no-contest plea to charges of carrying a concealed weapon. The league said last Friday that Iverson would have to sit out the season opener Oct. 31 against Milwaukee.

Iverson, the Rookie of the Year last season, was a passenger in a car stopped by police in Virginia for speeding Aug. 3. He entered his plea Aug. 26. Police found a gun under his seat and two marijuana cigarettes in the car.

In Santa Rosa, Calif., Golden State Warriors forward Joe Smith strained his right knee but the team said the injury did not appear serious.
