WATER IS BLAMED FOR FROG DEFORMITIES

Gross deformities found in frogs in recent years -- such as missing or extra limbs and a frog with an eye growing out its throat -- are traceable to something in the waters they inhabit, scientists said.

Preliminary results of experiments conducted by Minnesota and U.S. researchers showed that frog eggs nurtured in water taken from two wetland sites in northwest Minnesota where deformed frogs had been found produced malformed frog embryos.

Dr. George Lucier, director of the environmental toxicology program at the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, said, "We now need to determine if people are at risk."
