Spain's Princess Cristina married Olympic handball star Inaki Urdangarin in a glittering ceremony Saturday witnessed by royalty from 40 countries and a worldwide television audience of more than 1 billion.
Cristina, the younger daughter of King Juan Carlos I and third in line to the throne, took her wedding vows in Barcelona's majestic Gothic cathedral.
Wildly cheering crowds filled the cobblestone streets outside the 700-year-old cathedral, and hundreds of thousands more lined the flag-draped route of the wedding procession.
Almost every royal household was represented. The 1,500 guests included Monaco's Prince Rainier, Jordan's Queen Noor, Japan's Prince Norihito and the kings and queens of Sweden and Norway. Britain's Prince Edward stood in for his brother Charles, heir to the throne, who was still in mourning for his ex-wife, Princess Diana.
The newlyweds' honeymoon plans remained secret.
