Songs sung by those who served in the Vietnam War will provide the folkloric centerpiece for a Western New York Documentary Heritage Program event at 4 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park.

Lydia Fish, director of the Vietnam Veterans Oral History and Folklore Project, will use taped examples to discuss how the songs served as strategies for survival, emotional expression, camaraderie and morale as well and entertainment and social commentary.

The free program also is sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities and the Western New York Association of Historical Agencies. The program precedes the association's "Call to Arms," an annual fall conference planned this year with a Civil War theme.

Ben Maryniak, president of the Buffalo Civil War Round Table, will be the keynote speaker as the conference opens at 10 a.m. Nov. 8 at Genesee Community College, Batavia.
