The five members of the reggae-punk band Sugar Ray haven't been able to profit from their overnight success just yet.
The band's hit "Fly" rose to No. 1 on Billboard's modern-rock charts last month, but lead singer Mark McGrath still can't pay the bills.
"You see yourself on MTV, and your record goes gold, and you're like: 'Wow! We're going to see some money.' And then you see that you owe the bank of Atlantic Records lots of dough," he said in the November issue of Spin. "I called my dad today to borrow some money so that I could pay my pager bill. My $62 pager bill!"
But at least more people are coming to their shows.
"Just four months ago, we played a full set in Spokane (Wash.) for one guy with a respirator in his nose," McGrath said.
