Among the 10 recipients of this year's Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts is the Just Buffalo Literary Center. The presentation will be made Monday at a ceremony in New York City's Lincoln Center and will be broadcast on PBS.
Others on the list this year are the movie actor Christopher Reeve, the musical theater star Kitty Carlisle Hart, the artist Chuck Close, the choreographer Jerome Robbins, the jazz artist and educator Dr. Billy Taylor, Thalia Spanish Theatre/Sylvia Brito, Syracuse University Arts Connection and the philanthropist Sanford Weill.
Receiving the award for Just Buffalo will be Debora Ott, who founded the literary organization in 1975. Just Buffalo is one of a handful of influential literary organizations across the country that program readings, workshops and related community endeavors.
Its focus has been poets and writers, many of whom have become well-known over the years.
Just Buffalo started out in the Allentown Community Center, later renamed the Clarkson Center, and has since moved into its own quarters in the Tri-Main Building, 2495 Main St., Suite 436.
