Eugene Flanagan, 81, of Martinez, Ga., formerly of Wheatfield, died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 1997) in Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Ga., after a long illness.
Flanagan, who had retired from the Union Carbide Corp. after 40 years with the mining and metals and Linde divisions, was an active member of the Wheatfield Recreation Commission from its inception until 1981. He served as secretary and chairman of the Senior Citizens Committee and as chairman of the Recreation Commission.
Known as Red, he was born in Elenora, Pa., and, during World War II, Flanagan served with the 101st Airborne Division.
He was a member of the 101st Airborne Association for many years and a charter member and past commander of the Wheatfield Post 1451, American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, the former June Haynes; three daughters, Margaret of Hume, Carolyn Dimond of Niagara Falls and Donna Layton of Martinez; two brothers, Edward of Hamlin, Texas, and William of Lockport; four sisters, Margaret Coder and Vi Moore, both of Niagara Falls, Ilene Timblin of North Tonawanda and Inez Martinez of Buffalo; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in DuBois Funeral Home, 2436 Niagara Road, Bergholz. Burial will be in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Bergholz.
