Colden's 1998 general fund and highway tax rates will remain at 1997 levels despite increased appropriations, according to the tentative budget that Supervisor Marilynn J. Calhoun presented Thursday to the Colden Town Board, which will act on it Nov. 6.

The $494,517 general fund, up 6.85 percent, includes 3 percent salary hikes for most elected officials and town employees and $64,000 set aside for capital improvements, including $40,000 for Town Hall expansion, $8,000 for park land purchase, $16,000 for a highway equipment shed and $6,500 for a Parks Department shed.

The general fund tax rate will remain at 13.9 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation, thanks to a $2 million increase in assessed valuation above this year's $107.2 million level and the use of $130,000 in fund balance for revenues, Mrs. Calhoun said.

The $444,114 highway fund, up .09 percent, again will require the same $3.89 tax rate. Garbage district residents next year will be charged $126, a $2 decrease.

Colden Fire District residents will pay a $3.09 tax rate, up 93 cents, to finance the voter-approved service award program. The Aurora-Colden Fire District rate drops 5 cents to $2.11. The tax rates could change if equalization rates change.
