Forward Evan Whitson scored two goals to lead the Buffalo Blizzard to a 6-5 win over the Cleveland Crunch in a National Professional Soccer League exhibition game at Sportsplex in North Tonawanda.

Liz Johnson of Niagara Falls lost in the second of two two-frame roll-offs to Anne Marie Duggan, 48-28, in the opening match of the LPBT Track Triton Open stepladder finals in Rossford, Ohio. Johnson and Duggan tied in their regulation game, 206-206, and 40-40 in the first rolloff. Duggan lost the title match to Carol Gianotti-Block, 180-157.

For the first time in Darrell Waltrip's 25-year Winston Cup career, he didn't make a race he tried to qualify for. Waltrip failed to make the field for Sunday's UAW-GM Quality 500 in Charlotte, N.C., ending a streak of 216 Winston Cup starts dating to September 1990.

After a grueling weekend in the Ryder Cup trenches, Davis Love III welcomed the relative serenity of the Buick Challenge in the tranquil setting of Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga.

While Love's 5-under 67 left him just one shot behind leader Mike Brisky after the first round, it didn't ease the pain of Valderrama.

"I could win the next 10 tournaments, but we still lost the Ryder Cup," Love said.

Fresno State racked up a school-record 12 sacks and held Utah to a season-low in points in a 27-13 victory. Billy Volek threw for three touchdowns and linebacker A.J. Gass led the defense with five sacks.
