STORM-WEAKENED TREE CRUSHES GIRL, 6, TO DEATH

A 6-year-old girl died after being crushed by a tree that had fallen the night before in a storm, authorities said.

Elizabeth Ferriter was playing with her sister Meghan, 5, Tuesday afternoon near the base of the tree, according to authorities.

As their father and grandfather trimmed upper limbs, the tree's weight shifted and pinned the girls, said Monroe County Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Martin.

The girls were freed from beneath the tree and taken to Rochester General Hospital.

Elizabeth was pronounced dead a short time later. Meg-han was released after being treated for minor injuries.
