Buffalo Police Officer Laurence D. McLaughlin was arrested this morning on a warrant charging him with passing a bad check, authorities said. Later in the day, he resigned.
McLaughlin, an 11-year member of the department, has been on unpaid sick leave in recent months. Department officials said he also faces internal disciplinary action.
He was brought into Police Headquarters handcuffed at 10:25 a.m. and booked.
Detective Paula Carducci and Lt. Robert Calabrese of the Professional Standards Division and South District officers arrested McLaughlin at his Cumberland Avenue home.
"It was a spontaneous, voluntary resignation on his part," said Deputy Police Commissioner John R. Battle. "At the time this occurred, he was facing numerous departmental charges."
McLaughlin had been absent from his job without permission, police said.
