PROFESSOR PLACED ON LEAVE IN WAKE OF RACIST COMMENT

A University of North Texas professor has been placed on paid leave after telling a campus forum that minority students have poor class attendance habits.

Don Staples, a broadcast and film professor, apologized for the comment he made Friday, during a discussion attended by about 200 students, faculty and staff on how to advance the university.

But Monday, Alfred Hurley, university chancellor, issued a memo that said racism will not be tolerated.

School officials said Staples likely won't return to work until after an Oct. 10 diversity workshop he has pledged to attend. The university in Denton has 25,026 students, including 1,871 blacks and 1,645 Hispanics.
