The referee who had a massive heart attack during Saturday's Virginia-North Carolina game improved to serious condition Monday evening after worsening earlier in the day. James Knight, 51, of Charlotte, collapsed during the second quarter of the game and was taken to the hospital on the University of North Carolina campus.

Liz Johnson of Niagara Falls stands in sixth place after the first round of the $75,000 LPBT Track Triton Open in Rossford, Ohio. Johnson has a pinfall of 1,770. First place belongs to Kim Adler of Las Vegas at 1,862. Sue Jeziorski of Tonawanda is in 28th place at 1,625.

Southwestern graduate Jay Wadsworth scored twice as the Buffalo State men's soccer team improved to 2-4 with a 5-3 win over Penn State-Behrend. Rich Paige, Ron Suazo and Craig Ross (Wilson) also scored for the Bengals.
