PEDESTRIAN HIT BY CAR ON NIAGARA THRUWAY

An East Tupper Street man struck by a car Sunday evening while attempting to cross the Niagara Thruway on foot in a heavy rain was hospitalized with leg injuries, state police said.

Michael Manney, 39, was taken to Erie County Medical Center after being hit at 9:15 p.m. near the Peace Bridge. He remained in the Emergency Room this morning, where his condition was being evaluated.

Manney suffered compound fractures of both legs when he was struck by a car operated by Michelle Mercurio, 26, of Hamburg, police said.

Trooper Johnnie Edwards said Manney apparently was intoxicated and was walking toward the city as he attempted to cross the Thruway. An investigation was continuing.
