A married U.S. Air National Guard technical sergeant leading a "double life" killed his girlfriend and their two children, then drove 73 miles to the air base, where he stuffed the boys' bodies in a backpack inside his locker, police said.
Peter Contos, 31, was arrested Sunday in the killings of Catherine Rice, 35, and their sons, Benjamin Rice, 4, and Ryan Contos, 2 months.
A neighbor's discovery of Ms. Rice's body in the bathroom of her apartment Saturday led police on a frantic all-night search for the children.
Contos walked into the police station after being telephoned by detectives, but would not disclose the fate or the location of the two boys, according to police.
The hunt ended early Sunday at the Otis Air National Guard Base, where Contos is a technical sergeant in the 102nd Fighter Wing.
Police did not provide a motive, but said Contos has been married for a year to another woman who was unaware he had a girlfriend and two children. Ms. Rice didn't know he had a wife.
