Town police said they are investigating a fight early Saturday at a Center Street bar in which several Niagara University basketball players allegedly attacked and injured another Niagara student.
The victim, Thomas W. Williams III, 20, suffered injuries to his lower lip and eye after he said two students whom he identified as members of the basketball team repeatedly punched and kicked him in the face and body when he started talking to a girl inside the Park Place Bar, 765 Center, police said.
Two or three other basketball players also were alleged to have participated in the fight.
By the time officers arrived, the assailants had fled, and Williams was advised to obtain warrants for their arrests on Monday in Town Court, police said.
Police said they were greeted by a rowdy crowd of 50 to 70 people in the street at Ninth and Center streets, where the fight had continued after the bar employees made everyone leave.
Officers dispersed the crowd; Williams declined advice to seek medical attention.
The bar was closed at 1:21 a.m. at the request of investigating officers, police said.
