One week after knocking off the No. 1-ranked team in Western New York, St. Joe's found itself on the short side of the score.

Jeff Sargent caught five passes for 101 yards and scored twice as Grand Island surprised the defending Msgr. Martin Association champions, 25-14, Saturday in a non-league game.

Sargent had a 3-yard rushing touchdown and caught a 9-yard scoring pass from Tom Winarske. Luke Edwards and Brad Greenfield each had two interceptions.

St. Joe's, ranked No. 19 in the state in Class AA, got a 9-yard touchdown run by Mike Fanti and Dennis Cesarz found tight end Sean Ryan on a 9-yard touchdown pass. The Marauders beat North Tonawanda last week, 17-14.

In other non-league games:

Allegany/Limestone 34, Canisteo 8: Senior running back Chuck Fortuna rushed for 238 yards and three touchdowns for the Gators.

Fortuna's rushing touchdowns of 7, 2 and 12 yards gives him nine touchdowns for the season. In four games he has 809 yards on 113 carries.

St. Francis 27, Edison Tech 13: Robert Misso recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown, threw for a score and ran for another to lead the Red Raiders (3-1) over Rochester's Edison Tech (3-1). His touchdown pass was a 15-yarder to Mike McDonnell and the rushing score came from 1 yard out. Ryan MacLean rushed for 104 yards and Dan Donahue keyed the defense with 15 tackles.

Aquinas 31, Canisius 14: Frank Fusco scored both touchdowns for the Crusaders in a loss to Rochester's Aquinas, the No. 9-ranked team in Section V. Fusco scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter and a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter. Aquinas jumped out to a 24-6 lead at halftime.

Portville 43, Niagara Catholic 8: John Dibarbieri was a workhorse again for the Panthers (4-0) as he ran for three touchdowns and scored a fourth on a 33-yard interception return in a romp. He also ran for a two-point conversion. Tim Kennedy scored on a 45-yard run for the Big Red.

Walsh 14, Clymer 12: Running back Adam John finished with 133 yards on 22 carries and scored on a 13-yard run to lead the Eagles.

Harvard Cup

South Park 28, Burgard 6: Demario Jones recovered three fumbles which led to touchdowns as the Sparks extended their winning streak to 13 games.

Senior quarterback Keith Smoot was 6 of 13 passing for 119 yards. Linebacker Demond Miles had 10 tackles. Greg Smith scored for the Sparks on runs on 2 and 9 yards. Tim Delaney and Purcell Spain also had rushing touchdowns. The Sparks are ranked No. 22 in the state in Class AA and share the No. 4 spot in Western New York.

Hutch-Tech 29, Riverside 14: Keenan Jackson carried only 10 times, but he made the most of his chances with 229 yards and three touchdowns for the Engineers. Jackson's scores came on runs of 67, 2 and 56 yards. Riverside's John Manney had 127 yards rushing and scored on a 3-yard run.

McKinley 18, Bennett 8: Justin Morrison passed for one touchdown and ran for another as the Macks tamed the Tigers. Morrison hit Nick Sullivan with a 52-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and then ran in from 1 yard out for the only scoring of the second half.

Kensington 14, Lafayette 0: Ron Carr rushed for 200 yards on only 10 carries and scored on runs of 80 and 35 yards while playing just the second half for the Knights. Mark Harwell added over 150 all-purpose yards. Kensington's defense forced six turnovers and was led by Rashan Oliver and Kevin Settles with 10 tackles each.

Timon/St. Jude 24, St. Mary's 15: Quarterback Adam Vogel opened the scoring on a 1-yard run and hit Pat Shea with a 3-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter to lead the Tigers. Joe Demers ran for 93 yards and a 6-yard touchdown for the Tigers. Paco O'Connor hauled in a 58-yard touchdown pass for St. Mary's and Greg Burke added a 1-yard run.
