Dr. John T. Gabbey, 58, of Clarence, who operated a private practice in internal medicine in Clarence for many years, died Saturday (Sept. 27, 1997) in Buffalo General Hospital after a two-year battle with cancer.
He graduated magna cum laude from Canisius High School, Canisius College and the University of Buffalo Medical School, and served as medical director of the Erie County Home in Alden and the Mercy Health Care Center in Watertown.
At Canisius High School and College, he was a well-known basketball player. From 1971 to 1992, he served as sports physician at the college, which has has established an award in his honor for excellence in athletic training.
He was a member of the Ontario Jockey Club.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa Wright Gabbey; a son, John T. III; a daughter, Jane Horan; two sisters, Jane of Pembroke and Martha Mancuso; and a grandchild.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Christ the King Catholic Church at Main Street and Lamarck Drive in Snyder after prayers at 9 in the Dietrich Funeral Home, 2480 Kensington Ave., Snyder.
