The 1997 Black Achievers in Industry Awards banquet, which honors African-Americans who have achieved success and retained their community spirit through volunteerism and involvement with community groups, will be held at 7 p.m. next Sunday in the Buffalo Convention Center, following a reception at 6 p.m.

Herbert L. Bellamy, founder of 1490 Enterprises, began the annual awards banquet 25 years ago, and more than 600 persons have been recognized over the years.

Veronica Holland, corporate affairs administrator for Schieffelin & Somerset Co., a worldwide importer of wines and spirits, is co-chairwoman of this year's event, and James Hill Jr., a fire investigator for the Buffalo Fire Department, is co-chairman.
