A recent item on the Opinion Page by Mary Beth Spina criticized "Leave It to Beaver" because in her view it was not typical of the average family. Most of the young mothers I know are well-groomed and pleasant -- not the "bag ladies" she described. And many fathers do come home from work happy to see their families -- not yelling at the children and throwing a fit.
Perhaps the average family Ms. Spina describes should be viewing shows like "Leave It to Beaver" instead of the distasteful offerings on TV today. It might help improve their family life.
Some hardships, sadness and bad days are inevitable. But I congratulate couples who attempt to make family life a mostly happy experience.
