David Brinkley, 77, will be signing off from TV news for good after he delivers his commentary for ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

He announced his retirement on Thursday, less than a year after he stepped down as host of the Sunday morning news show that bore his name.

Brinkley began his career at 23 covering President Franklin Roosevelt. As half of NBC's anchor team in the 1960s, his short, clipped sentences and dry wit were much imitated.
