U.S., CHINESE OFFICIALS EYE ESTABLISHMENT OF HOT LINE

The next time President Clinton encounters problems with China, he may be able to just pick up the phone and find his Beijing counterpart on the other end.

Officials from the two countries are talking about establishing a hot line between the White House and Beijing, China said Thursday.

The disclosure comes a month before Chinese President Jiang Zemin is to pay his first state visit to Washington. Both sides expect the Oct. 28 trip to boost ties despite differences over human rights, trade, weapons sales and other issues.
