The Newstead Town Board has agreed to rebid rather than renew the town's three-year garbage collection contract. Supervisor Donald C. Holmes said Thursday.
Under the current contract up for renewal in December, with Browning Ferris Industries, Waste Management and Modern Disposal, the town has the option to renew, Holmes said, but decided to withdraw because of the high costs.
"It's expensive," he said. "Other municipalities get better deals."
The town pays $54.88 per ton to ship and dispose of the solid waste at the American Ref-Fuel waste-to-energy plant in Niagara Falls.
Holmes said the Town Board formally notified Akron officials of its plans to seek bids for waste collection.
