A judge today ruled against a runoff in the Democratic mayoral primary, effectively putting an end to Al Sharpton's mayoral bid.
State Supreme Court Justice Beatrice Shainswit ruled against Sharpton's challenge following a 10-minute hearing, saying, "I sympathize with Reverend Sharpton, but it doesn't come down to how anybody feels. . . . The decision has been made by the electorate."
The Sept. 9 primary was bogged down in problems with unofficial returns that night indicating that Messinger had less than the required 40 percent of the vote that would have given her the nomination outright.
A week later, the Board of Elections announced it was finding errors. The board's final count showed she was 793 votes over the 40 percent margin.
