John C. Dwyer of Batavia, a local businessman and a member of the Genesee County Industrial Development Agency board for the past 17 years, has been appointed Executive Director of the GCIDA.
GCIDA chairman John F. Andrews, who made the announcement Thursday, said Dwyer was among 35 applicants for the position following the resignation in August of Alice Cocalas, who served for 16 months.
Dwyer resigned last month from the board he once chaired to become a candidate for the director's position. He is president of the family-owned Thomas and Dwyer Shoe Store but said he will give up his interest in that business.
Dwyer has been long active in community activities including Notre Dame High School, St. Jerome Hospital Foundation, Genesee United Way, and the Lions Club. He has been honored with several community-service awards.
He takes over Wednesday, according to Neil T. Burns, a former IDA director who has been working with the agency since Ms. Cocalas resigned.
