NASCAR GRANTS CHEVYS A CHANGE IN SPOILER HEIGHT

After weeks of lobbying by Chevrolet teams, NASCAR announced a quarter-inch increase to the rear-spoiler height on Monte Carlos for Winston Cup competition.

The rules change will go into effect for the Oct. 5 UAW-GM 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The timing of the announcement was a surprise, coming with just five races left in the Winston Cup season -- the home stretch in the race for the season's championship. Jeff Gordon, who drives a Chevrolet, holds a 105-point lead in the standings over Ford's Mark Martin. Dale Jarrett, who also drives a Ford, is third, 184 points behind Gordon.

Teams are heading today for Martinsville, Va., the site of Sunday's Hanes 500.

Gordon has won 10 times this season, but no other General Motors car has won a race.
