Pupils from preschool age through eighth grade will celebrate the birthday of Johnny Appleseed with a schoolwide "theme day" devoted to apples Friday in St. Paul Lutheran School, 453 Old Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda.
"This is the first year we have planned a 'theme day' when all of the students of the school do work with a single topic throughout the school day," according to Principal Paul Gerlach.
John Chapman, better known as "Johnny Appleseed," was born Sept. 26, 1774. He traveled through the Ohio River Valley, planting apple seeds as he walked. He became friends with Native Americans and early settlers and is a celebrated hero in the legends of the American Westward movement.
