Buffalo's Department of Assessment warned city property owners not to respond to telephone solicitations for overdue tax payments.
Bruna Michaux, senior tax administrator in the assessor's office, said several property owners have called her office recently to complain about strange telephone calls from a woman identifying herself as an employee of the Department of Assessment.
"The lady is calling property owners whose taxes are in arrears and requesting they make immediate payment," Ms. Michaux said. "No one from this office is making phone calls like that."
Requests for taxers in arrears are made by letter from the Department of Assessment or in the form of a bill, she added.
"Apparently, someone has access to our data file. But again, my only concern is we don't want anyone to send money to whoever these people are," she said.
