BRUINS WANT SUSPENSION FOR SLASH ON THORNTON

The Boston Bruins on Wednesday asked the NHL to consider suspending Penguins forward Stu Barnes for a slash that broke the wrist of No. 1 overall draft pick Joe Thornton in an exhibition game.

"It was definitely a slash, a two-handed slash, and we have informed the league that we're going to send (a tape) in," Bruins assistant general manager Mike O'Connell said.

Brian Burke, the league's director of hockey operations, could not immediately be reached for comment. League spokesman Andy McGowan said the slash is under review.

Thornton is expected to miss six to eight weeks.
