HOW COULD SO MANY MISINTERPRET TOLES?

I don't believe it. How could so many people not understand the thrust of Tom Toles' cartoon regarding Princess Diana and Mother Teresa?

Of course Mr. Toles did not think that Mother Teresa was "old and ugly." He was merely reflecting the attitude of the paparazzi, who would not consider her a suitable subject for their attention. My friends tell me they have never seen a picture of Mother Teresa in the pages of the National Enquirer.

As soon as I saw the cartoon, I called it to the attention of my staff. I think The News is fortunate to have a talent like Mr. Toles.
